Hertingfordbury Parish News: December 2003

Mercie Crane (March 1930 – October 2003)

Mercie died on 25th October in the Hammersmith Hospital. She will be missed enormously at St Mary's Church, where she was a regular member of the congregation. She was a kind, thoughtful, caring and most generous person, who contributed fully to the life of the church. Mercie was one of the 'special team' of hassock workers, and it is sad that she will not see the last runner for the choir stalls which will bring the project to an end. In her memory, members of the congregation not only contributed towards flowers for her funeral, but also sent a donation of £160.00 to The Royal British Legion – one of Mercie's favourite charities. Her funeral at St Andrew's Church, Bramfield, was attended by her large family of relatives, school friends, those she met during her working days at Addis Brushworks in the town, members of the Hertingfordbury W.I., neighbours in Carde Close, members of St Mary's congregation, and other friends. It was a large gathering of people all touched by Mercie's personal qualities, by which she will be remembered.

During the many conversations I had with Mercie while she was in hospital, I remember her saying: "When I get home, I shall write a piece for the Parish News to thank all the people who have sent me letters, cards and gifts." On behalf of Mercie I should like to pass on her sincere thanks to those who gave her much encouragement and happiness during her time in hospital.
