Hertingfordbury Parish News: November 2003

Litter, Litter Everywhere

Whilst out walking last Sunday morning I was completely stunned by the amount of litter everywhere around the Greens. My walk took me down the Cole Green way and I was appalled at the litter thrown into ditches and undergrowth. I proceeded on to Hertingfordbury where the picture was the same, and then on to the Old Coach Road, which is inundated with plastic bottles and paper and even a huge pile of discarded newspapers. I know that some of this is thrown from passing cars, but some must come from people using the walkways and paths. I have contacted the council asking for the Old Coach Road to be cleaned, but as yet nothing has happened. I would ask that Villagers call to complain and 'Walkers' if you want to be proactive and preserve this beautiful landscape take a plastic bag with you every time you go out to walk and pick up four pieces of litter. If this problem isn't taken seriously we will soon be up to our necks in it as most of the litter I saw doesn't just rot away!

Deborah Wheatley,
