Hertingfordbury Parish News: February 2003

Flowers and Churchyard Maintenance

The time has now come to remove all Christmas decoration from graves and cremation plots; any left by the end of February will be removed by the Clergy or Churchwardens. The following is taken from a Diocese of St. Albans lealfet:Churchyards A Guide for Parishioners: "The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is usually responsible for making sure that the churchyard as a whole is properly maintained, but families are responsible for looking after their individual graves. The level of overall maintenance varies from place to place for example, some churchyards are mown every week, while in others wildlife is encouraged by leaving some areas of longer grass and wild flowers. Generally, wreaths or cut flowers may be laid on a grave, but the PCC may remove them when they become withered. Vases and other containers can cause problems with mowing and other maintenance, so please respect any special rules the PCC has made to ease this problem. Artificial flowers are NOT allowed in Churchyards." Please note: we as a Parish are responsible for our own maintenance. We are fortunate to have a regular team who meet once a month, and do sterling work to keep our grounds pleasant to attend. They would be pleased to have additional hands. Remember one volunteer is worth ten pressed men/women. Rev'd Rosemary
